ImageTHE LAKE PLACID INSTITUTE for the Arts and Humanities' mission is to enhance the cultural life of the Adirondack region.

We do so by shaping an environment that fosters creativity;  by bringing the talents of world class artists, leaders and thinkers to the community; by developing and sustaining high-quality, innovative programs; by forming partnerships with other local and regional organizations; and by celebrating the cultural heritage of the Adirondacks.

THE ART BOOK CLUB  is a monthly group meeting on the last Monday of each month, September through May, to discuss fiction and non-fiction works focusing on artists and/or the visual arts and art history.  Each meeting will be led by a presenter and will consis of informal discussion about the book selected to be read for that meeting.   Books will be easily accessible to all, in terms of subject matter and availability, and may include novels based on the lives of artists (such as Stone's The Agony and the Ecstasy about Michelangelo), biographies, mysteries, memiors, bestsellers et al.  For more information, e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

THE ADIRONDACK ROUNDTABLE attracts scholars, political and cultural leaders, environmentalists and others to the Lake Placid region to participate in public forums, usually held at breakfasts during the summer. The Roundtable is chaired by John C. Bogle and advised by a board of both year-round and seasonal residents. Speakers have included former Vermont governor Madeline Kunin, Russell Banks, Andrew Lack, Gretchen Morgenson, Brian Mann, John C. Bogle, David Cuthell, David Sloan Wilson, Paul Dunkel and Mike Useem. Adirondack Roundtable series are help at the Lake Placid Crowne Plaza.

LUNCHEONS WITH ARTISTS. Artists have included painter Bryan LeBoeuf, fiber artist Annoel Krider, glasss artist Brennan Kasperzak, painter Anthony Brunelli, Sculpture PJ LaBarge, painter Georgeanne Gaffney and interdisciplinary artist Bruce Gundersen.

24 HOURS – A PHOTOGRAPHIC INTERPRETATION OF LIFE IN THE ADIRONDACKS.  

The Lake Placid Institute for Arts and Humanities invites all high school students in the Adirondack region to participate in a visual interpretation of their surroundings in the Institute’s new program: “24 Hours – A Photographic Interpretation of Life in the Adirondacks”. 

Theme:  Photos must be taken within the Adirondack Park, from April 15, 2009 through April 15, 2010, and represent one hour of a day in the Adirondack Park.  Each photo must be accompanied by a brief description of when, where and why the artist chose to photograph that particular scene or subject.

Submitting Entries for Jurying:  Entries will be accepted starting on March 1, 2010 and must be postmarked or submitted on-line no later than April 15, 2010.  Entries must include the photographer’s name, age, grade, the hour the photo was taken, date taken, location of the photo, type of camera used, and the name of the supervising teacher.  Photos must be able to be replicated in 11” by 14” formats.

Awards:  Photos will be selected by an appointed jury.  These photos will be matted and framed along with the essay to be exhibited in three venues in the Adirondack region. The collection will also be included in the Institute’s online gallery.

THE 2010 GREAT ADIRONDACK YOUNG PEOPLE'S POETRY CONTEST

Our poetry contest entries are from students across the Adirondacks. Our thanks to all the students that participated over the years. We have received many entries and those judged the best can be seen online. Many thanks to the educators, librarians, parents, and friends who inspire our youth to express their thoughts, feelings, and observations -- and make their voices heard.

THE 2010 CHAMBER MUSIC SEMINAR FOR ADULTS This seminar will be offered August 16 through 20, 2010 and offers string players and pianists the opportunity to play and study great chamber music in New York's beautiful Adirondack Park. Participants will work with world-class faculty in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, focusing on ensemble techniques and general musicianship. Participants may come as individuals or as part of pre-formed groups.  Chamber music participant concert on Friday, August 20th begins at 6:00 p.m. and is pay as you wish!
