ADK Roundtable

 

THE ADIRONDACK ROUNDTABLE attracts scholars, political and cultural leaders, environmentalists and others to the Lake Placid region to participate in public forums, usually held at breakfasts during the summer. The Roundtable is chaired by John C. Bogle and advised by a board of both year-round and seasonal residents.

Saturday, June 26th :  Chris Noth, “An Actor’s Life”
 
CHRIS NOTH is an accomplished graduate of the Yale School of Drama that continues to build upon a versatile career in film, television and on stage.

Some of his screen ventures include Robert Zemeckis’ Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks; Tom DiCillo’s Double Whammy, with Denis Leary and Elizabeth Hurley; and the independent film Searching for Paradise and “Sex and the City”.   He can soon be seen in “Sex and the City 2.”


Noth can currently be seen on CBS’ show “The Good Wife” opposite Julianna Margulies. He recently reprised his role as Detective Mike Logan on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. He originated this character during the first five seasons of Law & Order. Noth received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as Mr. Big on HBO’s Sex and the City.  
 
Noth received rave reviews as Teach in American Buffalo at the Berkshire Theatre Festival. He enjoyed a successful Broadway run of the revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, starring opposite Charles Durning and Michael Learned. He most recently starred in Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North at the Atlantic Theater Company in NY and then brought the play to the Geffen Theatre in Los Angeles    He has also performed at Playwright Horizons in New York, the American Shakespeare Festival in Connecticut; New York’s Manhattan Club, Circle Rep, La Mama and the Roundabout Theater; the Seattle Repertory Theater; and the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.
 
Saturday, July 10th:  Jim Burrows,  “Maintaining A Private Life in Show Business”
 
JIM BURROWS has been called "The Spielberg of Sitcoms," and is one of the few TV people to make the switch from Director to Producer.  Early on the Director of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”,  later the Director and Producer of “Will and Grace”; as well as the Producer of “Cheers” and “Friends.”  
 
Burrows was born in LA in 1940, but his family moved to NYC, where he went to the High School of Music and Art.  Did college at Oberlin and then graduate school at School of Drama, Yale University.
 
Has been nominated for an Emmy Award for directing a comedy episode 24 times in 26 years, one nomination every year since 1980, excluding 1997 and 2004. He has won - as director - 5 times.
 
 
Saturday, July 17th  - John Cooney, “News Without Newspapers
 
JOHN COONEY  formerly worked for The Wall Street Journal as a reporter, editor and foreign correspondent; his work in Cuba was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.  He has reported from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe and The Middle East.  His articles have covered numerous subjects, ranging from the bankruptcy of the Penn Central Railroad to political upheaval in India.  His non-fiction books include “The Annenbergs:  Salvaging a Tainted Dynasty”, “The American Pope:  The Life and Times of Francis Cardinal Spellman”as well as “Louis Rukeyer’s Business Almanac.”    Fiction works include “A Better Place to Die”,  “A Fool’s Death”, and “Acts of Contrition.”
 
He was a Rotary International Fellow in India and a recipient of the Russell Sage Fellowship for journalists, which took him to Sweden.  He received the University of Missouri Journalism School's research award for his book “The Annenbergs”; the book was also nominated for a Pulitzer.   
 
 
Saturday, August 14th - Howard Stahl, “Saving Historic Properties:  Economic, Aesthetic, and Practical Considerations”
 
 
HOWARD STAHL  is a trial attorney in Washington, D.C. and a partner in the law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP.  Howard H. Stahl is a partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Litigation, Business Solutions, and International Departments.  Mr. Stahl's practice of more than 30 years focuses primarily on the litigation, negotiation, arbitration, and mediation of complex commercial disputes and torts. His cases have involved a wide range of legal applications from those concerning federal securities, racketeering, products liability laws, and constitutional challenges to those involving state contract, tort, officer and director liability, corporate control, and consumer issues, and he was listed in Leading Lawyers 2007 under Business Litigation
 
In addition to his legal career, Mr. Stahl has also purchased, restored, opened for public viewing, and then sold a number of historic homes, ranging from colonial to revolutionary to antebellum to post Civil War periods.   He is also very knowledgeable about all the tax and easement incentives that exist for preservation.
