The Blue Line Young Filmmakers Project
Designed to foster media arts skills and bring attention to the next generation of Adirondack filmmakers. The Blue Line Young Filmmakers Project is a creative challenge sponsored by the Lake Placid Institute and the Adirondack Film Society that is open to all high school students in grades 9 – 12 who reside in or attend school in the Adirondack Park including any county which is partially located in the Adirondack Park. This includes all public, private and home-schooled students.
CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOL FILMMAKERS!
The 2019 Blue Line Young Filmmakers Project is now open! To participate, high school students must create a short film (ten minutes max) telling a cinematic story in any genre, following the creative challenge and all rules as described below:
Entries will be scored by a panel of independent judges on the criteria described below and the top scorers will have their films shown at the Lake Placid Film Festival in October of 2019. In addition, cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 films:
First prize $500, second prize $300, and third prize $200.
All submissions will be given an “All Session Student Pass” to the 2019 Lake Placid Film Festival!

To enter, follow these instructions:
CREATIVE CHALLENGE:
Each short film entry must somehow include each of the following elements:
1. Prop: a key
2. Dialogue: “I can’t remember the last time…”
3. Image: A Stewart’s Shop. Minimum 3 second shot of the interior or exterior.
CONTEST RULES:
1. Each entrant must be a high school student (grades 9-12) currently residing in or attending school in the Adirondack Park or any county in which is partially located in the Adirondack Park during the 2018-2019 school year. Students graduating from high school in 2019 may enter, as long as their entry is uploaded and registration form submitted by June 1, 2019, which is the deadline for all entrants.
2. Each entrant may only enter once. Film entered may be created by more than one student as long as each filmmaker meets the criteria for entrants.
3. Films must be no longer than ten minutes and the file size is less than 5GB.
4. All entries must follow the Creative Challenge above, must have at least one 3-second shot of the assigned prop, image and filmed in the Adirondack Park or county.
5. Any digital format including cell phones are acceptable.
HOW TO ENTER:
1. Make an awesome short film, following the contest guidelines and shooting requirements.
2. Upload your film to Vimeo. Click here to go to Vimeo
Make the film private and email the link to bluelinefilmmakers@gmail.com along with the entry form (below). Please make sure your film is smaller than 5GB, which is the size limit with Vimeo.
3. Complete and submit the official entry form (Below).

Quality of the story and shooting script, including the filmmakers approach to the creative challenge (for example, the use of the prop).

Production values

Design, including graphics, special effects, production design, sets, costumes, etc.

The Lake Placid Institute for the Arts & Humanities celebrates the Adirondack region’s rich cultural heritage through high-quality, innovative educational and cultural programs. The Institute is a platform for world-class artists and thought leaders to present their work and share their ideas, while also providing residents, visitors and students the opportunity for cultural and intellectual enrichment. Programs include The Great Adirondack Young People’s Poetry Contest, the 24 Hours photography contest for high school students, a Chamber Music Seminar, an annual trip to a Broadway theatre in Manhattan, and an Art Book Group that meets monthly at the Lake Placid Library throughout the winter and spring.
About the Adirondack Film Society
The Lake Placid, New York-based Adirondack Film Society (AFS) has been working to meet its mission of advancing “the art and appreciation of film and filmmaking in the Adirondack region” since its founding in 1999. It presents the annual Lake Placid Film Festival, the region’s premiere multi-day film-related event, which has brought top-notch professional filmmakers to the Olympic Village to screen films and participate in related programs in intimate settings ideal for audience interaction. The mostly monthly (September through May) AFS Screening Series at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, which began in September 2014, is currently in its fifth year; and next summer will mark the fourth consecutive year the AFS has presented special screening programs at the Strand Theater in Schroon Lake after serving as the nonprofit conduit for grant funding that helped the Strand acquire digital projection equipment. Board and staff members of the AFS are thrilled to be partnering with the Lake Placid Institute on the “Blue Line Young Filmmakers Project”—viewing the program as being part and parcel of the AFS mission.
